Good Scents Courses

Nosework Foundation Level 10 weeks

In this level we introduce your dog to the world of nosework with the aim to comfortably have your dog searching for one specific odour (cypress oil) by the end of 10 working sessions. The emphasis is on fun as we simulate detection style search areas from the early lessons. Environmental challenges are managed to build your dog’s confidence. Handler observation and leash skills are developed as we introduce you and your dog to the world of imprinting, pairing, and observing body language.

Nosework Intermediate Level 12 weeks

Problem solving skills and challenges are presented at a deeper level in the 12 session intermediate course. Scent theory takes stage as you discover how different environmental conditions affects your dog’s search. Hide placement supports specific learning chapters such as semi-inaccessible hides. Challenging interior and exterior searches, containers, vehicle searches, a different location, and weather patterns await our intermediate teams.

As handler observation is built upon, we gradually move from paired hides to fast external reward only. Clove is introduced as a second odour. Your dog must complete our Foundation course before entering Intermediate.

Nosework Advanced Series 12 weeks each

Over 12 working sessions in the Advanced and upper Advanced levels we build your dog’s search repertoire with complex hide placements. You and your dog will cover the following, but not limited to, large area searches, inaccessible hides, buried hides (sand and water), elevated hides, floor cracks, threshold and corner hides, and converging odour. Different locations are introduced as well as aniseed as the 3rd odour.

For those handlers wanting to enter Nosework trials we can delve into trial preparation, as well as discussing the advantages and disadvantages of Trained Final Responses (TFRs – training your dog to provide a behaviour such as a sit or down at the hide) Your dog must complete our Intermediate course before starting Advanced.
